Primary research directions

What 3 of the most-cited and most recent VIP papers report, in their own authors’ terms. Each line links the paper it came from.

  • Vascular smooth muscle relaxation

In cat and rabbit cerebral arteries, VIP levels correlated with the presence of non-cholinergic nerve-mediated vasodilation, and relaxation to VIP persisted without endothelium, which the authors say is consistent with VIP mediating that response.

  • Cytokines and NF-kB signaling

In a rat knee osteoarthritis model, intra-articular VIP plasmid improved joint pathology, lowered serum TNF-alpha and IL-2 and raised IL-4; in cultured synoviocytes it reduced TNF-alpha, MMP-13 and ADAMTS-5 and increased collagen II, which the authors link to inhibition of NF-kB signaling.

  • Mucosal immune regulation

In purified human B cells, VIP together with CD40 stimulation induced IgA production and mu-to-alpha class switching, which neither alone did; the authors suggest VIP may help direct the humoral immune response at mucosal surfaces.

How these numbers were counted

  • PubMed search, run November 1, 2026: "vasoactive intestinal peptide"[tiab] OR "vasoactive intestinal polypeptide"[tiab] re-run it. Study types add PubMed’s own filters (review, clinical trial, animals not humans).
  • Topics: MeSH major-topic headings counted across up to 400 of the matching records; headings for study set-up (species, sex, age) are left out.
  • Citations: NIH iCite citation counts for the same records.
  • ClinicalTrials.gov search: "vasoactive intestinal peptide" re-run it. Any phase, any status.

This page reports what has been published and what papers say they found, with each source linked. It gives no dosing or usage information, and nothing here is a reason to use VIP outside a laboratory.
